Although many people today regard the holiday of Memorial Day as a three day weekend of barbeques and beaches opening, the true meaning of the holiday is an important part of our lives as Americans.
While Memorial Day has its roots in the American Civil War, it has become extremely important in our modern era.
It is a day of remembrance for soldiers who fought in the United States armed forces and lost their lives in service to their country. Volunteers throughout the country often visit national cemeteries to place American flags near the gravestones.
Several members of our Student Council, including Jia Halloran and Matt Ventrella, gave speeches and presented poems from the heart, thanking veterans for their service and reminding the students here to remember those who lost their lives.
A check was presented by Matt Ventrella with money raised by students here in West Milford for the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization which assists veterans who have been injured in battle.
