If you’ve spent any time on social media, you’ve probably seen comments like, “I miss the old Taylor Swift,” “I wish Ariana Grande would go back to her old music,” or “This actor isn’t the same anymore.”
It seems like every time a celebrity changes their style, releases a different type of project, or simply grows older, people immediately compare them to who they used to be.
While nostalgia can be a positive thing, it sometimes creates unrealistic expect-ations for the celebrities to uphold.
Many fans become attached to a specific version of an artist because
it reminds them of a certain period in their own lives.
The problem is that celebrities are people, too. Just like everyone else, they grow, change, and discover new interests over time. Expecting them to stay exactly the same can make it difficult for them to explore new creative directions.
This is especially common among Gen Z. Many of the artists and actors we grew up with are no longer teenagers or young adults just starting their careers. They are entering new stages of life and naturally, their music, acting, and public image are changing as well.
However, instead of embracing that growth, fans often focus on wanting the past back.
The reality is that while we were growing up, the celebrities we admired were growing up, too.
The version the artist was when they were 12 years old and we, as fans, fell in love with them, may not be the same version of the artist today when they are 25 years old, or 35 years old – and that’s okay.
Growth doesn’t erase the past; it simply adds to it. Rather than constantly wishing for the “old” version of our favorite celebrities, maybe it’s time to appreciate how far they’ve come and recognize that change is a normal part of life for everyone, famous or not.
In the end, nostalgia can help us remember why we fell in love with certain artists in the first place. But if we focus too much on the past, we might miss out on who they’re becoming today, and the cycle will forever repeat.
