With some new categories being added this year including Gym Warrior, Most Outdoorsy, and Most Charitable, the Senior Superlative section of the yearbook for the Class of 2026 is sure to be a crowd pleaser, but did you know that these are also the categories for Senior Choice Awards which is held on the morning of Prom?
Back in the day, Student Council and TV Science used to put on an hours-long joint production of the Cablethon, which was a massive undertaking. However, as many things did, this changed with the culture of the school including things like COVID, the prevalence of cell phones, and just different interests and planning issues.
In the past the auditorium used to be crammed full of the graduates along with their friends and family at a red-carpet event. But, year after year, attendance at the evening event had been waning, and it seemed only those who were nominated attended, which was not the purpose or goal of the Awards show. Something had to be done.
Thus, two years ago, the idea to hold Senior Choice Awards on the day of prom, which is typically a wasted day anyway if we are being honest here, and combine it with the senior breakfast AND yearbook distribution was born. It was a hit. This new arrangement allowed for the whole class to be there, no other obligations like work or sports interfering, and everyone got to cheer for their favorite nominee in hopes that they would come away with the golden trophy. It also allowed for the Senior Class Council, Yearbook and Student Council to team up to use their joint forces rather than spreading everyone even more thin with time and money.
There is a slideshow of the nominees and the awards are handed out, breakfast is during intermission, and yearbooks are distributed at the end of the event with seniors being allowed to chill in the auditorium together signing yearbooks until it is time to be dismissed for prom. It follows pretty much a typical television awards style announcement show, names in sealed envelopes and all that, with emcees and trophies, and even some speeches from the winners.
This is where you come in! We are hoping to bring back some of the elements of the old-style Cablethon, like interviews with certain people who were nominated (or even for something else that is noteworthy even if it is not part of the Senior Superlatives, like a star athlete or someone with a unique hobby) or interviews with teachers, Mr. Strianse, that sort of thing. We would also like to have “acts” in between some of the awards again–nominated for best dancer? We need a dance off to prove it! Love to sing? Pick a song and get up there! Do you play guitar? Do magic? Have a comedy routine, can do cool tricks with a basketball or frisbie or something? hatever you can do, we want to see it! Perform alone or in a group, either one works.
Typically our Senior Class Council members are the main emcees, BUT, we need many volunteers to do the individual awards, so if you want to be involved, let us know. Go to room 123 to see Mrs. Petrosillo where you can sign up to perform or to be an awards presenter. Other possible contacts for information are me, as the yearbook contact, or any Senior Class Council member.
Whether you were nominated or not, whether you perform or not, or end up announcing something or not, this is our chance to make one of our last memories as the Senior Class of 2026, so let’s make it count!
