Memorial Day weekend is about more than just a barbeque and hanging out with your family and friends. It is a time to recognize all those who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. On May 22, West Milford High School made sure to give recognition to those who have made that ultimate sacrifice.
There was a ceremony held in the gym where we honored those who have served our country. The choir sang the national anthem and the bagpipes crossed the gym, leading the veterans and current military service members to their seats. Former marine and current staff member at Highlander Academy Mike Nowacki opened the ceremony with a memorable speech on what Memorial Day is really about. We continued to honor those veterans who were able to attend the ceremony that day by giving them their own moment. Each Veteran was named and an explanation on their service was read. Seniors Enya Barrett and Lindsay Wittner read the names of veterans that have passed or couldn’t be there with us the day of the ceremony. A moment of silence was given to those that have passed and a wreath was placed on a stand in their memories.
After the beautiful ceremony, students had the opportunity to go to the lower library and hear the different stories each veteran had to offer. We learned about the different meals that soldiers had to eat or the things they had to carry throughout their missions. Pictures were passed around, as were memorabilia items that were used throughout their time in the military. It was a great opportunity to learn more about American history and what veterans went through during the time they served. Pictures were set up around the library showing historic events such as Vietnam, World Wars I and II, and the war in Afghanistan.
The event was organized by the War and Remembrance committee, Mrs. Petrosillo, Mrs. Pry, Ms. Csengeto, and Mr. Jordan who would like to thank Mrs. Burns and Lighting and Audio, Mr. Smolinski and the Pipe and Drum Corps, Jess Pritchett, Mr. Weaver and the choir, Mrs. Metcalf for founding the program and providing her guidance, and the tech team for their support with the slideshow.
War and Remembrance day is a day to reflect and give recognition for heroes that have stepped up to serve our country. It was a wonderful day to honor those that have or still are serving. West Milford High School is honored to have a day dedicated to our brave soldiers. Thank you to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
