Swifties, it’s official—Taylor Swift now owns all her music. She’s still planning to re-record “Reputation” and her self-titled debut album “Taylor Swift”. If you’ve been following along for the past few years, you probably already know about Taylor’s battle to own her masters.
Back in 2019, the original recordings of her first six albums were sold without her approval, and instead of backing down, Taylor decided to re-record every single one. She called them “Taylor’s Versions”—and so far, we’ve gotten “Fearless”, “Red”, “Speak Now”, “1989”, and she even added some new songs from the vault with each release.
In a letter she shared on her website, Taylor wrote, “It never would have been possible to go back and remake my first six albums if you hadn’t made it fun. I’m so grateful to be able to reclaim my work and tell my story the way it was meant to be told.”
And it really has been fun—fans have loved hearing the updated versions of their favorite songs and discovering unreleased tracks that were written years ago but never made the original albums. Plus, Taylor’s voice has matured so much that some of the re-recordings sound even better than the originals.
Now, with only “Reputation” (Taylor’s Version) and “Taylor Swift” (Taylor’s Version) left, fans are more excited than ever. “Reputation” was a bold and edgy album that showed a different side of Taylor, and it’ll be interesting to see how she approaches the re-recording. Of course, her debut album—the one that started it all—will be a major moment once it’s released.
Even though Taylor’s not on tour right now (The “Eras Tour” wrapped up its last leg late last year), she’s still keeping fans guessing with secret projects, surprise releases, and maybe more vault songs on the way.
At the end of the day, Taylor Swift’s decision to re-record her music isn’t just about the songs—it’s about artists standing up for themselves. As she said in her letter, “Artists should own their work for so many reasons, but the most screamingly obvious one is that the artist is the only one who really knows that body of work.”
And now, for the first time ever, Taylor Swift finally owns hers.
