If you’ve been anywhere near BookTok or Bookstagram lately, you’ve probably seen the rage: “We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart is being turned into a series—and fans are freaking out (in the best way).
The book, which first came out in 2014, follows Cadence Sinclair and her cousins who spend their summers on a private island. It seems like the perfect rich-family summer dream… until something awful happens, and Cadence can’t remember what. There’s a big twist that totally wrecks you, and if you know, you know.
Thanks to TikTok, the book blew up again over the past couple years, with people posting reactions like “I cried for days” and “That ending???” One of the biggest BookTokers, @aymansbooks, called it “the book that got me into reading again.” Another creator, @abbysbooks, said “This story destroyed me in the best way possible.”
With the trailer for the show finally out, people are even more obsessed. The vibe is dark, dreamy, and kind of creepy—basically, perfect. There’s already tons of fan theories about the casting and what they’ll change (or hopefully keep the same).
We don’t have an exact release date yet, but it’s expected sometime later this year. Until then, people are either rereading it or telling their friends, “Just read it. Don’t Google anything. Trust me.”
So if you haven’t read “We Were Liars” yet, now’s the time. And remember “if anyone asks you how it ends… just lie.”(Lockhart 227)
