Most people may not see St.Patrick’s day as any major holiday in their books. However, did you know that there are many movies/shows set in Ireland; deep driving into the culture, traditions, and language of the country, I bet you didn’t. In honor of St.Patrick’s day here’s a list of some movies/shows you should check out before this St.Patrick’s season ends.
- “P.S. I Love You”
“P.S I Love You” is a 2007 romantic comedy starring Hilary Swank as Holly Kennedy and Gerard Butler as Gerry Kennedy. The film was shot in locations such as New York City and County Wicklow, Ireland. “P.S. I Love You” is based on the Cecelia Ahern novel of the same name. The film follows Holly (Hilary Swank) who is trying to cope after her husband Gerry (Gerald Butler) dies in his 30s of a brain tumour. This is a movie about the grieving process and finding a new life after a loved one’s passing.
- “Derry Girls”
“Derry Girls” is a 2018 Irish coming-of-age sitcom that follows a 16-year-old girl Erin and her friends as they grow up in a world of armed police in the 1990s of Northern Ireland. Most scenes were shot on location in Derry and some in Belfast. The show is created and written by Lisa McGee and is largely inspired by Lisa McGee’s own troubled experiences growing up during the period of violent conflict in Northern Ireland, which lasted roughly around 30 years in Ireland.
- “Leap Year”
“Leap Year” is a 2010 melodrama set in Dublin, Ireland. Although the movie was filmed all over Ireland, some of the most loved fan favorite scenes were filmed in Glendalough and Enniskerry, Ireland. “Leap Year” stars Amy Adams as Anna Brady and Matthew Goode as Declan. Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take a big action. She plans to follow her lover to Dublin and ask him to marry her, however fate has other plans. Anna winds up on the other side of the Emerald Isle with handsome Declan, an Irishman who may just lead Anna down the road to true love.
- “Normal People”
“Normal People” is a 2020 drama series based on a novel written by Sally Rooney named “Normal People”. The series is set in Carricklea, Ireland (a fictional place), but filmed in the real Tubbercurry in County Sligo, Ireland. The series follows the two main characters, Marianne and Connell, from secondary school into college and early adulthood as they go in and out of each other’s romantic lives and start growing up. It’s highly recommended to read the novel before watching the drama because viewers have been disappointed that the series does not follow the book plot precisely. The series is still somewhat faithful to the book.
- “Irish Wish”
“Irish Wish” is a 2024 romantic comedy set in modern day Ireland. The film takes place in Dublin, Wicklow, and Westport. This movie stars actor/actresses such as Lindsay Lohan as Maddie Kelly, Ed Speleers as James Thomas, and Alexander Vlahos as Paul Kennedy. The film follows a woman named Maddie (Lindsay Lohan), and her tragic love life. She’s clearly in love with her boss, Paul, which no one suspects, not even her best friend, Heather. Everything changes when Heather gets engaged to Paul, making Maddie a bridesmaid. Dreading this big Irish wedding, Maddie makes a wish to become the bride, and this wish is granted-or is it?
