After a solid season last year, the West Milford-Pequannock-Pompton Lakes Ice Hockey Team went back to the sectional tournament, where they fell to Kinnelon by a score of 8-2. The team ended their season with a 14-13-1 record, a slight drop from their 15-8-1 record last year. After starting with a record of 6-12-1, the team won eight straight games until falling in the Sectional Finals.
The team had a 3-2-1 record and placed second in the Big Stripes – North division.
Senior Kyle Gregory leads the team in both assists (51) and points (80), while sophomore Timmy Riche has put 40 shots in the back of the net. In goal, junior Matt Montena has blocked 1,039 shots while letting 137 find the back of the net, posting a save rate of 88.4%.
WM-PQ-PL battled in the Cup tournament trying to win the Big North Silver Cup.
They first defeated Paramus by a score of 6-5, then took on Tenafly in the semi-final round, beating them by a score of 9-2.
Then a team they had already faced three times this season was the matchup in the finals. Rivals Lakeland and WM-PQ-PL played a hard fought game and WM-PQ-PL ultimately prevailed with a final score of 6-5, and are Big North Silver Cup Champions.
The team then bested Nutley in the Quarterfinal Round of the Sectional Tournament with a score of 12-5. They moved on and beat Lakeland for the third time this season in the Semifinal Round. This victory gave WM-PQ-PL a 3-1-1 record against the Lancers on the season.
WM-PQ-PL then played Kinnelon in the Sectional Final. Timmy Riche put two shots in the back of the net, along with one by Barroquerio, however the Colts’ offense was too much to overcome. Braydon Sisco scored five goals, while Eddy Brown scored twice, and Cormac Gibbons scored once for Kinnelon. WM-PQ-PL lost by a score of 8-3, but will look to have another strong season next year.
