The banning of TikTok throughout the U.S. was announced on January 19th. This news devastated people who loved the app and others who used it for promotions to their brands, songs, and so much more.
The reason behind this ban, according to CBS news, is that the U.S. government claims how Chinese government is mining U.S. citizens’ personal information through the app cbsnews.com. Your data can get leaked through any unsecured website or platform asking for your information, so it wouldn’t be surprising if that were the reason for its ban.
Many people from the U.S. switched to youtube and instagram to fill in the gap of no longer having TikTok as a source of entertainment. Another new app that garnered a great deal of attention during the temporary ban was rednote, which is another Chinese owned app.
The TikTok ban only lasted approximately 14 hours. Although the beloved app is back, if someone from America deleted it, they can no longer download it again because it’s still deleted from the app store.
While some people didn’t seem too affected by the ban, with an anonymous source stating, “It was good while it lasted”, several people seemed to be in favor of the ban, as brief as it was. One anonymous student stated, “People need to get real jobs and stop relying on TikTok as a full-time job” while another person said, “It’s a good thing because this generation needs to get off of their phones and actually participate in the community.” What do you think? Were you for or against the ban, and should it have continued rather than ending as soon as it did?
