On December 4, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was brutally assassinated on the streets of New York City.
He was on his way to a conference inside the Hilton on West 54th Street. The gunman was seen roaming the site of the shooting just fifteen minutes before Brian Thompson was killed.
Around 6:45 a.m, the gunman, just a few steps behind Thompson, shot him in the back. Surveillance footage shows the gun apparently jamming and the suspect getting it unjammed before shooting two more times.
Thompson was shot three times and was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
Engraved on the bullets were the words, “Deny, Defend, Depose” which refers to insurance companies’ common practice to collect more money from the people they insure.
The suspected gunman is Luigi Mangione. Mangione comes from a prominent family in Maryland that owns multiple successful businesses, including coun-try clubs, nursing homes, and a radio station. He was the valedictorian of his prep school in Baltimore.
On December 9, Mangione was arrested in Altoona, PA at a McDonald’s. He was allegedly arrested with a notebook that had plans of the killing inside, along with a gun, bullets, fake IDs and cash.
Before an extradition hearing in Pennsylvania, Mangione was heard yelling, “That’s com-pletely out of touch, and an insult to the intelligence of the American people.” The public is unsure as to what he was referring.
Speculation as to motive reveals that Magione suffered from severe back pain and was not provided proper medical treatment.
Another conspiracy is that he committed this crime due to his mother being denied insurance for medical treatment.
Investigators have said there is nothing tying Manigone to UnitedHealthCare, and they are still searching for a more concrete cause for his actions.
