When thinking of Christmas movies the iconic classics always come to mind first– of course there is Kevin in “Home Alone”, the heart that is two-times-too-small in “The Grinch”, the magical bell ringing in “The Polar Express”, etc. But when you’re at home on break this year and you are bored and need something to watch, maybe you don’t want to watch those same old movies that people talk about non-stop every year. They can get repetitive and just same-old, same-old. Instead, try taking a look at one of these underrated, but still really enjoyable, lesser-known Christmas movies. You won’t be disappointed!
“The Holiday Calendar” (2018)
This movie centers around a talented photographer named Abby who inherits this antique holiday advent calendar from her grandfather which holds magical powers. As she discovers that the contents inside of the advent calendar seem to predict the future, she starts to take the wrong hints and loses sight of what’s in front of her. This is a romantic comedy and is perfect for those who love a happy ending.
Love Hard” (2021)
“Love Hard” focuses on a character named Natalie. Natalie is a writer from Los Angeles, California and she starts messaging someone online thinking that this person is the new love of her life. Natalie decides to go to New York City for Christmas to visit him, only to find out that she’s been cat-fished by the original guy’s childhood friend. I would highly recommend if you want something comical to watch with your family and friends.
“Dash & Lily” (2020)
“Dash & Lily” focuses on two teenagers who develop a really strong connection and end up developing romantic feelings for each other. through messages and notes that they write to each other in a notebook. Through this notebook, the pair write about dares the other person has to complete all throughout New York City during the holiday season. I highly recommend this selection if you would like a very short miniseries to watch during the holidays.
“Noelle” (2019)
This movie centers on a character named Noelle who is Santa’s daughter. Unfortunately her brother has to take over for Santa this year but, he disappears and goes to California. Noelle must then go on an adventure to find him and bring him back for Christmas. This hilarious movie is also really comforting and is a great watch for this Christmas season. It will definitely get you in the holiday spirit if you need it.
“Let it Snow” (2019)
“Let it Snow” is based on a novel written by John Green, Maureen Johnson , and Lauren Myracle, called “Let it Snow”, which is about a group of high school students who get stuck in a snowstorm in their small town. Many of the friendships featured are intertwined with each other somehow, but overall the kids are not in one big friend group throughout the movie. Every story that is told f slightly affects the next story within the movie. It’s a very good watch, especially if you love, romance, friendship, or anything about high school drama. Hopefully these recommendations give you something new to look forward to this holiday and break rather than the ones you’ve seen on repeat. Even those are enjoyable classic Christmas features, it is wonderful to expand your viewing to include something new!
