Winter is here and the musical arts are spreading the holiday cheer! The band hosted its winter concert last week on December 12 at 7pm. The auditorium was full and there was excitement throughout. The stage was decorated and the holidays are getting closer, adding to the crowd’s enthusiasm.
Since Dr. McLaughlin was set to retire at the end of last year, he, Mr. Gramata, and the other directors spent some time looking for a new replacement. Eventually, with the help of the Wind Ensemble, all parties involved selected Mr. Paterno, who pleased to present his his debut concert with the school and bands.
First up to play was Mr. Paterno’s Symphonic Band. They played well under his leadership and earned a big round of applause.
Next up, the bagpipers played their songs. The bagpipes have been a tradition at the high school for years, and since Mr. Smolinski took over directing them, they have become a focal point of the holidays.
They were great. The bagpipers then exited the auditorium and a minute later, the Wind Ensemble walked out onto the stage.
They played their pieces and then prepped the stage for the final part of the concert in which both bands perform together. The song of choice has always been “Sleigh Ride” chosen for its upbeat tempo and iconic “neigh”, and for sure it is a wonderful finale piece for all to perform.
On December 18 the chorus held their winter concert. They sang beautifully and it was a fantastic way to end the first few months of the school year as students and teachers alike move into the holidays and a much needed break. Enjoy the time off!
