The 2024 Met Gala was held on Monday, May 6 in Manhattan, New York City. It is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This year’s theme was “Garden of Time,” going hand-in-hand with the spring exhibition’s theme “Sleeping Beauties : Reawakening Fashion.” “Garden of Time” is based on J.G. Ballard’s short story. The theme is to wear fashion having to do with nature, florals, water, earth, fire, etc. This year’s co-chairs were Bad Bunny, Zendaya, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Anna Wintour. Those who are invited are in one of the following professions : fashion, film, television, music, theater, business, art, sports, politics, or social media. With that being said.. let’s take a look at some of the best looks of the night.
- Zendaya
Zendaya rocked the red carpet, not once but twice, wearing two stunning gowns styled by Law Roach. Her first dress was a Maison Margiela Asistinal by John Galliano creation, based off of a 1999 Dior dress. The dress was one-shouldered and had a emerald green and royal blue striped trumpet skirt at the bottom. She had intricate accessories that really made her outfit such as fruit-like embellishments on her waist, a net mesh and a feathered fascinator on her head, and a little bird on her neck. Her outfit really embodied a dark and mysterious fairy-tale villain. Her second gown was a black 1996 John Galliano creation from his Givenchy Era. The dress included a laced up corset, off the shoulder puffy sleeves, and an extremely long skirt. She wore a bouquet-themed fascinator wrapped in black tulle designed by Phillip Treacy on her head. Zendaya left people stunned in awe of her outfits.
- Tyla
Tyla’s dress stunned everyone at her first Met Gala. Olivier Rousteing, the creative director of Balmain, helped bring Tyla’s idea to life. They wanted to specifically focus on the time in The Garden of Time theme so they decided to make a dress made out of sand, much like an hourglass. The strapless dress was made to tightly fit her body, so much so that she had to have people carry her up the stairs because she could not walk. The dress was made with three different colors of sand and micro crystal studs. She also carried a Balmain hourglass clutch.
- Mona Patel
Entrepreneur Mona Patel stunned everyone with her jaw-dropping dress for the 2024 Met Gala. Patel wore a gorgeous Iris van Herpen dress that included a corset designed to resemble butterfly wings. The flowing rose gold dress had intricate lines that can be found on butterfly wings. Her look was pulled together by an arm piece by Casey Curran that had animatronic butterflies all the way down it.
- Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner decided to go with this spring’s exhibition theme “Sleeping Beauties : Reawakening Fashion.” Jenner hoped to wear something by Alexander McQueen, the creative director of Givenchy from 1996 to 2001. The house of Givenchy pulled a dress from their protected private archive. Jenner became the first person to ever wear one of McQueen’s fall 1999 looks for Givenchy haute couture. The collection was presented 25 years prior but was never shown on the runway. The gorgeous dress is covered with more than 100,000 black beads and sequins, which took over 500 hours to hand-embroider. The dress fit Jenner like a glove.
- Elle Fanning
Fanning glowed at this year’s Met Gala in a glassy, transparent gown by Balmain that made it look like she was in an ice dress. The off-the-shoulder dress had flowers coming off the sleeves and a gorgeous flowing skirt. Fanning embodied the theme in a feminine and romantic way. She kept her accessories, silver heels and Cartier earrings, and makeup simple, which truly paid off. It allowed us to admire her stunning dress.
I, for one, can’t wait to see next year’s theme and the outfits everyone comes up with.
