For the third time in the postseason during the Josh Allen era, the Bills once again fell short to the team of the decade, Kansas City Chiefs as they made way for their sixth straight AFC championship game at Baltimore with Patrick Mahomes at the helm.
In their latest encounter the narrative seemed all too familiar. The Buffalo Bills with a high powering offense led with Josh Allen, James Cook, and Stefon Diggs all entered the game with a glimmer of hope mixed with a heavy burden of history. The Buffalo Bills came into the playoffs red hot winning six games in a row becoming the two seed. They seemed destined to get another shot at their playoff demon in Kansas City; this was the year they would finally get over the hump. It was different, for the first time in this rivalry they were the ones who had home field advantage; the Chiefs finally had to travel to Buffalo in an intense environment. It appeared as if the Chiefs offense was as vulnerable as ever and yet…it was simply not enough.
Kicker Tyler Bass who was 9 for 9 in his career on game winning or tying field goals came in with 1 minute and 49 seconds to go in the 4th quarter. He lined up for a 44-yard game tying field goal and then missed “wide right.” These two words have haunted the Bills for 34 years after they lost Super Bowl 25 due to a missed field goal wide right. The Chiefs were then given the ball back and ran the clock out to win 27-24, eliminating the Bills once again.
The Chiefs will now look to travel up to Baltimore and try to go back to the super bowl to win their second in a row which has not been done since 2005 when Tom Brady and the New England Patriots defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bills will look to heal up and get better for their team for next year and they hope to get another shot at this growing rivalry.
