The theater is one of the most entertaining places to be with a variety of movie genres and snacks in which to indulge. Recently, a new swarm of films flooded into movie theaters everywhere. Of the new, incredible selection, “The Nun II”, directed by Michael Chaves, released September 8 of this year, has piqued several horror-lovers’ interests.
“The Nun” is about a demon that takes the form of a Catholic sister causing mayhem and despair for the Vatican and all priests who were sent to put an end to the chaos. The second film follows the point of view of Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), who was involved in the first attacks, being summoned by the Vatican to fight against this evil yet again. After a series of vile and strange mishaps throughout Europe, she then prevails, destroying the demon with the help of Sister Debra (Storm Reid) and members of the church in France. The main victims of The Nun’s (Bonnie Aarons) hellish deeds were Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey), Kate (Anna Popplewell) and Maurice (Jonas Bloquet). Sophie was the ten-year-old daughter of Kate, who was a teacher at the church. Sophie, unfortunately, was being bullied by three other girls who picked on her by saying she was in a romantic relationship with Maurice, the church handyman. Maurice was in love with Kate and did his best to protect her and Sophie, but he was constantly disrespected by everyone but Kate and Sophie.
After watching the movie myself, I personally enjoyed the movie a great deal. I was most impressed with the visual effects, such as the little nuances and the way the producers were able to sneak the Nun into frames. I loved the characters Sophie, Maurice and Kate. They had such a touching relationship. There were some points in the movie that caused me confusion, but it was still an entertaining movie. I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
Moviegoers who were polled had mixed reviews, “I would say that I liked the movie and thought the changes in timeline were cool once I figured it out” says one of our locals, David “Dave” Van Tassel. Anonymous claims that it unfortunately wasn’t as good, “There wasn’t much action until towards the end of the movie. There were jumpscares throughout the movie, but they weren’t that scary.”
Over in Paterson, I had the honor of interviewing some members of Madison Ave. Firehouse, “Mad House”. Firefighter James Roy says, “Overall, ‘The Nun II’ is a decent addition to ‘The Conjuring’ universe. I’m a fan of the supernatural movies, however, the plot and the character development can use some work.” Firefighters Kyle Massineo and Jerry Boucicaut both claim that the movie had “tons of twists”. Massineo also says, “Overall it started out boring but was more intriguing towards the end, but still left me confused. I give it a 6/10.” Boucicaut had a similar claim, “You really have to pay attention in order to ‘connect the dots’, which was somewhat explained at the climatic end. It was a decent scary-mystery movie.”
In the end, “The Nun II” has many incredible effects and the plot, although it is twisty and complex, would still rope in the viewer and capture their undivided attention. Unfortunately, this movie is quite confusing, but enjoyable nonetheless. Based on the ending of this film, it doesn’t seem like there will be a third, so you will have plenty of time to watch, catch up, and make your own theories on this bit of cinema!
