Summer of 2023 was the summer of movies. For all of May and June, “Barbie” was a highly anticipated movie with a cast that would demand anybody’s attention. When the movie was finally released, people brought their “A” games dressed in pink from head to toe and even dressing up as Barbie characters themselves, but, did the movie really live up to the hype that everyone was giving it?
The answer to the question is yes! Everything that was said about the movie before it came out was true. Greta Gerwig wrote Barbie in a way that empowered and inspired women across the globe. In the film Barbie was a great leader and never gave up. As for the dolls, they taught girls that they can be anything they want to be! Which is the empowerment all women need. The movie itself accurately represented issues that we currently face in our world. The film had a perfect balance of sending an important message while simultaneously making everybody laugh.
This was a perfect movie for girls who played with Barbies throughout their childhoods. They could easily relate to the message of the film. If you played with Barbies growing up, you definitely had that one Barbie whose hair you cut and put in odd clothing while scribbling all over her face with a Sharpie. Kate McKinnon accurately portrayed that funky barbie everyone had. She was cast as “Weird Barbie”. Weird Barbie was loved so much that she was turned into a legitimate Barbie doll. After the movie, tons of new characters have been turned into real Barbie dolls. President Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s version of Ken have come out alongside “Weird Barbie”, this way, everyone can now have their own 2023 updated iconic Barbie and Ken.
The movie had a story line that most people were not expecting. When you hear about Barbie and Ken, you automatically think of this perfect love story and how they will be together forever. This is because most of the shows and movies previously portrayed them in this ideal relationship. Greta Gerwig had a different story in mind. In this movie, Barbie is all about independence and self love. The overall message is something anyone watching the movie can take from and learn from, especially young women. Young women are often taught that they need a man to survive. When Barbie chose not to date Ken, it proved to women that they can stand on their own. It also rejected the message of women being looked down upon. The land of Barbie was perfect. There was a woman president and female doctors; things that we normally don’t see often in day-to-day life. But, when Ken and Barbie traversed into the real world and saw toxic masculinity, they were both mind blown by it. Barbie showed women that they can do the exact same jobs as men, sometimes even better. “Barbie” the movie had this message that will stick with viewers forever,
Sometimes people see movies and the hype they receive is so undeserved; then, other times people see movies and they don’t get enough hype. “Barbie” the movie had that hype and still deserves to be raved and talked about. The cast was incredible, and the message, being so powerful, will stick with people forever. If you have the chance to go see “Barbie”, take it! Run to the theater. You will not regret it.
