Some people might really like candy corn and say it’s amazing, but others might say it’s disgusting and awful– like I do. Candy corn is only brought out during the fall season, used even more around Halloween, but that doesn’t take away the fact how bad it is all year long, at least for me. When I hear candy corn I cringe–, the taste and texture of this candy stands out from the others, but not in a delightful way.
The pumpkin shaped candy corn that they have made recently is even worse than the normal candy corn. For me, this disgusting bit of waxy grossness is pretty high up on the ranks on my list of Halloween candy that I despise, but then for others, candy corn is one of their favorite Halloween candies. I feel like it’s about the person, because there is no middle ground of candy corn, you either love it, or you despise it like me.
The ingredients that are inside of this candy are, sugar, corn syrup, salt, gelatin, honey, artificial flavor and more, but the main ingredient that sticks out is confectioner’s glaze–and–for all those out there who love candy corn, you might not want to hear this. From a published article about two years ago, it states that “Candy corn contains the ingredient confectioner’s glaze, which is made from a bug secretion, according to USA Today. The secretion is what makes the candy’s hard coating” (https://www.ktvu.com/news/the-great-candy-corn-debate-sparked-after-ingredients-revealed).
Now would this have an effect on people knowing that there is bug secretion in candy corn and will they still enjoy having candy corn after finding this out? I know I wouldn’t, and the worse part is there’s a couple more disgusting ingredients that might turn some heads. Another article from USA Today from last year states, “Those last two items have led some candy corn detractors to note that candy corn is made of animal hides and bones, like Jell-O gelatin” https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2022/10/02/candy-corn-halloween-candy-trick-or-treat/8105627001/#:~:text=In%20addition%20to%20sugar%2C%20corn,%2C%20like%20Jell%2DO%20gelatin.).
Now after hearing about some of these ingredients that are found in candy corn it really makes you think is it really that good? Like I said before, I despise candy corn, so hearing about these ingredients in candy corn makes it a definite no for me. That’s pretty much the whole run down of candy corn, now the question is, after hearing some of these ingredients that I have listed above, do you still like candy corn?
Interesting background information on Candy Corn:
Did you know that Candy Corn has existed for more than 100 years? Candy Corn first appeared when the United States was a largely agrarian society, and its tri-color design was considered revolutionary. The lack of automated machinery meant that candy corn was only made seasonally, likely starting production in late August and continuing through the fall.
