Everybody put your hands together for West Milford Girls Varsity Volleyball! These girls brought home a close win in their game on September 14th. That night was a whirlwind of emotions for the team when their opponent, Lakeland, came out strong with a lead of 0-5 within the first two minutes. Our girls fought with everything they had.
The Libero, Emma Garcia, had 16 digs throughout the entire game. The dream team, two of our seniors, Amelia Liebau and Cassidy Kunz, were busy showing the crowd why Coach J makes them front and center. From their near perfect passes to their unbelievable blocks, these two could take down the court together. Liebau came in with 5 assists along with Kunz’s 11 kills totalling a 94% accuracy working together. Not taking away from the rest of the team, one of the captains and also the team’s setter, Anna DelColliano, displayed her dedication to this team. By the end of the night, DelColliano totalled 15 assists and 6 digs. These girls work together as if they are reading each other’s minds.
This match was a tough battle for the team, but the girls persevered. With the regular two sets per game coming to an end, the team pushed over into a third set, volleyball’s version of overtime, and pulled through strongly with a landslide win. If you want to watch a winning team, you undoubtedly have to attend one of the girls’ games.
The weekend before, on Saturday, September 10th, this team arrived at a tournament with ambition in their eyes and pep in their step. By the end of the night, they brought home 4 out of 5 wins. DelColliano said that her proudest moment as a captain happened at this tournament. “It was this year and we were at a tournament at Wayne Valley and even though we made it just as far as we did last year, I think this year our playing ability was extremely more advanced. Last year we were very slow and this year, we kept up with teams that were much better than us. I’m just really proud of us that we were able to keep up with teams that were supposedly so much better than [we were].”
