Demon Slayer Mugen Train Movie Review
“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba” is a Japanese anime film released in the fall of 2019 that instantly became a hit in the new gen anime world. With the advancement in popularity, creator Koyoharu Gotouge decided to leave season one of the show on a cliffhanger, the aftermath of which then became this movie. This movie was first released in Japan and grossed over $100 million dollars in the first 10 days. After such success, it was released in the US and Canada and grossed another $34.1 million, thereby making a whopping $469.9 million in box office. Not only is it raking in the money, but it got a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5 on IMDb.
The movie first starts out with our main characters Tanjiro (voiced by Natsuki Hanae), Nezuko (voiced by Akari Kito), Zenitsu (voiced by Hiro Shimono), and Inosuke (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) all going on a mission on a train that has been reported to have had multiple people go missing. When our heroes get on the train, they have to meet up with one of the top nine most powerful swordsmen in the Demon Slayer corps, Kyojuro Rengoku (voiced by Satoshi Hino), the Fire Hashira. Their goal is to try to stop all the demons from taking any more people. When they first get on the train and meet up with Rengoku, he is seen eating out of a bento box and after every bite he screams “Umai” meaning delicious. But after a while, a pale man, presumably the captain, comes around asking for tickets, but after the tickets were punched, everyone started to feel sleepy until they fell into a dream.
Each dream represents something whether it be from one’s past, a memory or an actual dream of one’s desire. So, while our characters fell asleep, a couple of kids were forced to work for the demon, and if they do their jobs well, the children will be blessed with good dreams. In order to get those good dreams, the children have to go inside of the dreams of the demon slayers by finding their spiritual core in the dreams and destroying it. First they have to get inside of the dreams, which they accomplish when the kids tie a rope to their wrist and connect it to the wrist of the person whose dreams they are trying to invade.
Not to spoil the whole movie, but I believe it was entertaining and a bit of a tear jerker. If you want to really understand this movie, you should watch the main show, “Demon Slayer”, which is only 26 episodes and I highly recommend it. But watch the show in sub (meaning in Japanese with English subtitles) because in that version you can really hear the emotion and feeling in the characters, and it sounds so real that you can feel each of the characters’ pains. Not to mention the animation is top tier, from the breathing techniques to the swing of each sword–all the detail put in by Ufotable was amazing.
The movie is a bit gory, so the movie is not recommended for younger people. Overall, I think this was a very entertaining and emotional movie. Everything about it was amazing, I highly recommend it, 5 Stars, 10/10 my new favorite movie.
