Movies Everyone Should Watch in a Lifetime and Why Part Four
If you have been following this article series, you know that I love a variety of movie genres. This article will broaden horizons even more and get many into the movie watching spirit.
Everyone knows the perfect movie night consists of laughter and a couple for whom you are rooting. The Pitch Perfect trilogy provides just that and more. The first movie follows Beca Mitchell, played by Anna Kendrick, as she starts college and joins the Acapella group, The Barden Bellas, run by Audrey (Anna Camp) and Chloe (Brittany Snow). Among the newcomers to the Bellas is Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who calls herself fat Amy “so twig b***ches don’t do it behind her back”. The Barden Bellas are competing to win the National title that Audrey messed up the previous year, so all the girls learn how to work together and become better versions of themselves.
The two biggest things people are drawn to in this movie are the comedy, which is non- stop laughter, and the singing; the songs are all modern to the time of the film. The second movie flashes forward to the Bellas’ senior year, and they add a freshman, Emily Junk, (Hailee Steinfeld) whose mother was also a Bella, making her a legacy, all while trying to figure out what to do with their lives once college ends. The third movie follows the Bellas to Europe as they compete in a military run competition to win a shot at opening for DJ Khalid. These movies will leave everyone laughing and smiling begging for more once the trilogy concludes.
On the other end of the spectrum is Beautiful Boy, a movie based on the true story of a boy named Nicholas (Timothee Chalamet) who is working through an addiction to crystal meth, and his father, David (Steve Carell), who will stop at nothing to help his son. This movie will leave viewers sobbing after it concludes, with the message of the hardships drug users and their families face shining through. Over a two year course, the movie shows the struggle as Nicholas falls deeper into addiction, then shows him being sober, and then again relapsing, a cycle that continues for a long time. Although it has a slow start, the movie picks up in a rather quick fashion, similar to how drug addictions occur. This movie should be on everyone’s watch list, especially teenagers who are around the same age as Nicholas when he fell into his addiction.
Horror movies that fall into the subcategory “slasher” are known to be a little on the stupid side, poorly written, and are typically repetitive. However, the horror movie franchise “Scream” is a unique take on serial killers and it breaks the mold of the typical “slasher” film. There are four movies currently out, with a fifth one currently in production set to be released in 2022. The first movie starts out with Casey (Drew Barrymore) getting a phone call from the killer who messes with her head until finally coming out of hiding in her backyard, which is an iconic horror movie scene. The movie then follows Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who seems to be the head target of the killings that Ghostface is committing. Sydney’s mom was raped and murdered the previous year, and reporter Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) are on the case, trying to figure out the killer and to save the town. All four of these movies are excellent, because the killer reveals all have meaning. Many horror movie series that involve multiple serial killers take weird turns after the second movie, however in all four “Scream” movies, the killer is unexpected and related to the previous killers. This is a must watch horror movie series for sure.
