Minecraft: A Comeback of the Ages
“Minecraft” is a game that was released in November 2011, as a blocky sandbox video game created by a Swedish game developer Markus “Notch” Persson. Minecraft got off to a slow start then sky rocketed to the top of the charts in sales and popularity. Many popular Youtubers started playing Minecraft and posting videos such as Bajan Canadian, ASFJerome, Ssundee, and many other entertaining and talented Youtubers. But after 4-5 years of having hundreds of millions of people playing online, all of a sudden those same hundreds of millions of people stopped playing. New games were coming out and people forgot about “Minecraft” for a long time… until…the pandemic happened and a spike in play occurred where millions of people once again returned to the game.
Whether it be for nostalgia, or simply for having fun with your friends, “Minecraft” has always been an entertaining game. People are enjoying playing in a survival world trying to beat the Ender Dragon with friends, or are having fun on the thousands of popular online servers like Hypixel, Mineplex, The Hive, and many others. Many players are expanding to many different games like BedWars which pits you against your opponents to protect your own bed while getting rid of your opponent’s bed. The bed also acts as a totem, which if you die in the game, you respawn in the location of your bed. There is also SkyBlock where you start off at a small island with a single tree and a chest with things like a bucket of water, lava, seeds, and other essential things. What you are trying to accomplish is making a base and just treating it like a normal world.
The returning craze led to an explosion of play of “Minecraft” on Youtube after many of the original “Minecraft” Youtubers stopped posting their content due to newer, more popular games coming out, or many of them just stopped posting in general because of something happening like a change in career. Youtubers like Dream and Technoblade are two of the most popular today. Both exceeded in PVP and Minigames including facing each other in a 1v1 to determine who was the better out of the two. Since both mainly played on different versions of “Minecraft” they ended up deciding to do six battles in total, three being on Dream’s main version, and the other three would be fought on Technoblade’s version. At the end of the day, Techno ended up victorious and still holds the crown of the best “Minecraft” player of this generation. The two have faced off before, but Dream ended up taking it when the two competed with each other in random teams during an event called “Minecraft” Championship.
“Minecraft” Championship was an event that consisted of popular Youtubers going against others in teams of four and playing many minigames, such as parkour, and hole-in-the- wall, each of the games get points based off of positioning of the team and how well they performed during each of the events. The two champions even once played with each other on the same team, taking out big names like Tommyinit and PeteZaHutt. After finishing the Minigames in 2nd place, it all came down to the finale, Dodgebolt, which is basically dodgeball, except the game uses bow and arrows. At the last moment it came down to Dream having to clutch a 1v1 for the win. All in all, Minecraft is still a fun and creative game for all ages. It may have lost popularity, but Minecraft has made one heck of a comeback!
