Gymnastics leaps to sectionals
The Gymnastics team this year was full of young, talented athletes. Along with the more experienced gymnasts, the girls bonded to form an interesting and competitive team. Head Coach Ms. Rembrandt, when asked what stood out to her from this particular team stated, “Their unity, they’re very much like a family, they help each other a lot with their routines and life overall.” Coach Flood said, “The ability of many gymnasts from different grade levels to work together” impressed her. It is clear that the gymnasts all supported one another and had a great season.
The Captains this year, Ashley Harrington, Celeste Leahy, Carlie Smith, and Maddie Coar shared their thoughts on the team this year, “[We are] a really diverse team with wide variety of skills who were really accepting, and showed great sportsmanship.”
The captains, who are all seniors, expressed their feelings about it being their last season with the team. Ashley Harrington said, “It’s so upsetting; I’ve cried multiple times already, I love this team, but I’m going to come back and help next season.” Celeste Leahy stated, “I really love this team because I came in only being able to do a cartwheel, and now I’m leaving with four years of varsity.” Carlie Smith noted, “Joining this team was probably the best thing I did freshman year, and it’s taught me a lot of things about the sport and life in general.”
Coach Rembrandt described the season as “[Starting] off kind of slow, but as the season progressed, we got better and finished strong.” Coach Flood described the season as “Promising for the future and successful.”
This season our WMHS gymnastics team had six gymnasts qualify for sectionals, Coco Metcalf, Kenzie McGuinness, Jordan Spencer, Emily Curving, Skylar Greenberg, and Claire Coyle. Coco Metcalf said that qualifying for sectionals made her feel “proud, because normally as a freshmen you don’t qualify.” Jordan Spencer said that her achievement was “Satisfying because you see all the hard work paying off.” Emily Curving and Kenzie McGuinness both saw this as a great accomplishment, recognizing that all their hard work this season paid off. Skylar Greenberg saw this as a culmination of all of her efforts over the years in the sport, “It’s a huge honor, all my years of gymnastics are finally paying off.” Claire Coyle echoed a similar sentiment, that “everything paid off at the end.”
The girls have all been preparing for the finals as they run through routines, fix little mistakes, and try to make it perfect. They also described how before they perform they have a little pep talk, make each other confident, dust the chalk off their hands and say “Homemade!”
The sectionals are Saturday, November 4 at Ridgewood High School, so go out and support our Gymnastics team!
