This October, The Highland Echo sat down with a student  who is very involved in the school community, Marcus Boguszewki.  Boguszewski, a senior, is the captain of two sports, cross country and volleyball. He has participated in cross country for three years and volleyball for four, earning varsity letters in both sports. He also is on the school bowling team in the winter, but that is not all.  Throughout his high school career, he has also done weightlifting and soccer.

Boguszewski’s passion for sports began in his early youth. As a child, he loved to be outside, which sparked his life-long love for sports.

When asked about college sports, Boguszewski said, “I don’t plan on doing sports in college, but I do plan on keeping up my athleticism by going to the gym frequently.”

Boguszewski’s personal life is just as intriguing. Boguszewski’s parents immigrated from Poland, which makes him and his brother, Kacper, first generation Americans. As hobbies, Boguszewski loves to listen to music, hang out with his friends, and go out to new restaurants to try new foods.

Boguszewski plans to attend Ramapo College to study nursing. In an effort to work toward this future goal, he is already an EMT in training and a lifeguard at Pinecliff Lake in the summer to hone his skills.

Boguszewski manages school, sports, hobbies, and work better than most; he does not have a job during the school year because it is too much to handle, as many students would agree. Most of his time is taken up by school work. He explained that he usually fits in his homework and assignments before practice or during lunch. He also added that it is stressful to maintain his good grades, which requires time and effort, which often means he goes to bed late. “Sometimes you have to choose–put all of your efforts into sports, or put all of your efforts into your schoolwork, because it’s so hard to do both” he said.  He also explained that while his parents have always been supportive of his love of sports, they don’t always understand the difficulty and effort it takes to be a hardworking athlete. From what we can tell, he is balancing it all very well.

Boguszewski’s role model might surprise some, but  he enthusiastically reports that  movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger is a person he admires due to “his hardcore mentality.”

Boguszewski mentioned what a great  time he has had at West Milford High School; the past four years have been a great experience for him.His fondest memories at the school all focus on his love of sports. In line with this, a particular moment that stood out for him was when he won the Most Dedicated Player award in volleyball because he felt like all of his hard work was recognized.

We took five with Boguszewski to discuss how he does it all.

1.) What is your favorite pump-up song before meets or games?

“Rock You Like a Hurricane” by the Scorpions.
2.) What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment with your athletic career?

“Becoming captain of two sports Junior year.”

3.) Do you have a saying or a motto by which  tyou life your life by?

“Winning is a choice.”

4.) What words of advice or encouragement do you have to share with younger students?

“If you have a dream, always pursue it, no matter how difficult it may seem to accomplish.”

5.) What do you think is your greatest weakness?

“I push myself very hard to be the best version of myself. I become very hard on myself when I don’t do well or when I don’t meet my own expectations.”
The Highland Echo was happy to get to know Boguszewski, and is positive that the school and the town feel lucky to have him as a part of the community. This exemplary student displays Highlander PRIDE every day!
