Another terrorist attack has struck England, this time in their capital city, London. On June 3, an unmarked van came barreling down London bridge, plowing into several pedestrians. After crashing the van, the terrorists proceeded into Borough Market, where they attacked multiple civilians with long knives. In the time since the attack, all three terrorists have been apprehended, and the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. The London Police Force quickly took control of the situation, clearing the area around the attacks, and arresting suspects. The city reacted with a level head, and stopped any further attacks from ensuing. There are allegations, however, that information may have been sent to the police about one of the attackers before the attack, and ignored. Members of the Muslim community in London had been suspicious of one of the London Bridge attackers weeks before the tragedy took place, and sent reports to the London Police. Despite this, it seems that the reports were ignored, or deemed somehow untrustworthy, so the attack went ahead without police intervention. London citizens responded to the attack with bravery, resilience, and grief. The political response has been more controversial, however. President Trump immediately seized the attack as an opportunity to further push his travel ban on Twitter, and publicly criticize London mayor Sadiq Khan. Theresa May and the United Kingdom’s Conservative ‘Tory’ party used the attack as an opportunity to further push their tough-on-immigration beliefs, just days ahead of the UK’s Prime Minister elections. The London Bridge attack is likely to have rippling effects on UK elections and policy in the near future. The attack also begs questions about policy in the United States in the near future. With terrorist activity on the rise overseas, the Trump Administration contunes to push harder on it’s anti-immigrant stance.  While Democrats continue to push back, Trump has indicated that he would like to take his current travel ban to a higher court, which may cause it’s reinstatement. While nothing is set in stone, this turbulant world stage means we should expect anything.
