A horrible tragedy affected the soccer world on November 28. The Brazilian National Soccer team’s plane crashed just outside of Medellin, Columbia. Seventy-one lives were lost in the crash, supposedly caused by an electrical failure, though some speculate the plane may have run out of fuel. Six survived the horrible incident. The team was set to play a game against Athletico Nacional on Wednesday, however due to the accident, the game never happened. The unbelievably talented team will never be forgotten; they were taken from this world way too early. Pilot, Miguel Quiroga, did not check that the plane had enough fuel to reach its destination. He cost 71 innocent people their lives. Due to the plane crash, Athletico Nacional asked for Chapecoense, Brazilian team, to be declared the champions of the Copa Sudamericana. This was a very kind and a truly gracious act by the Colombian team which shows the respect that soccer players have for one another. The tragic loss of the team will never be forgotten, and the spirit they showed on the field will not be forgotten either. The memorial for the team was held on December 2 in the Arena Conda stadium in Chapeco, Brazil. The mood of the memorial was obviously sadness, but it brought much anger as well from the families, friends, and other guests. Roughly 20,000 people in attendance paid their respects. The Chapecoense team will remain in the hearts of all, and nobody can stop them from kicking goals now.
