“Zootopia” shines light on social injustices

The new animated family comedy that hit the box offices on March 4 is a must-see for all ages. “Zootopia” is a film about Earth, but it’s not like our Earth, because its populace consists of intelligent mammals.
The opening scene serves as an explanation as to how these animals became so human-like, explaining that they have evolved over time and have begun to do things as humans did. The barrier between predator and prey has been broken, and together they live in harmony. The film’s story follows the tale of Judy Hopps, a rabbit from a small farming town outside of Zootopia, who dreams of becoming Zootopia’s first rabbit cop. Along her journey she’ll meet a great cast of characters, who are all voiced by actors who fit them perfectly. Watch as Judy forms a meaningful friendship with someone very unlikely.
The premise of the film is rather adult in nature, however. It deals with the issues of drug use, racism and stereotyping, themes extremely relevant in today’s society. With events like the Trayvon riots, the Baltimore riots, and perhaps the racist remarks and vast stereotyping by one such Republican candidate, audiences see how “Zootopia” mirrors our own society.
One of the easter eggs that hints at the hit television show “Breaking Bad,” reveals that a key conflict in the film is the use of drugs. The film is kept on track, and does not deviate from the major issue of racism, and we see in the world how this affects the city as a whole. In this city, the population is 90% prey, and 10% predator, you see how prey suddenly treat the predators as outsiders when the predators have done nothing wrong. This all stems from the main character’s remark that predators are vicious by nature.
The film is beautiful and includes a fun and fitting soundtrack. The animation is in 3D style, and is masterfully done. The motions are fluid and visuals are captivating. The soundtrack is fitting to the scene, and you are greeted by an original pop song by artist Gazelle (Shakira). The film overall provides a wonderful feeling, and when you leave, you may feel better than you did before. I enjoyed the film immensely. It is filled throughout with good, witty humor that an older crowd can enjoy, as well as some juvenile comedic moments for all to laugh at.
