Michelle Ridley, a twenty-six year old expectant mother arrived at the home of Dynel Catrece Lane in Longmont, Colorado this past Friday in response to an advertisement she saw on Craigslist for baby clothes. After being lured into the woman’s basement under false pretenses, the woman was stabbed and her baby was forcibly removed from her womb by Lane, who had been lying about a pregnancy of her own.
When Lane’s husband, David Ridley, returned home later that day, he was shocked to see his wife in the bathroom with a baby girl, who was gasping for breath and died shortly after Ridley arrived. Ridley rushed his wife and the dead infant to the hospital, after being told by Lane that she had miscarried.
Unknown to Ridley, Wilkins was still laying critically injured in basement of the house, and had managed to call the police during this time. She was brought to the hospital for immediate surgery, where she is currently in stable condition and thankfully will live after this brutal assault that led to the death of her baby girl.
Lane had been lying to her husband and two children, who believed she was pregnant, and so Ridley and the two children were not involved in the assault on Wilkins. Lane had worked extensively to keep her lies going. She had even scheduled a prenatal appointments for the day of the attack with a doctor to keep her story believable. Lane was a registered nurse’s aid, and had been researching Cesarean births in order to perform this act on an unsuspecting young woman.
Lane had been arrested that day on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, assault, and child abuse that resulted in death. After she made a confession, formal charges were considered, but will be assessed at a later time. Police are currently trying to find other women that may have seen Lane’s advertisement on Craigslist.
