Disney’s newest release of “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, provides a fresh new look at a timeless classic. While other fairytales may come and go, the story of the kind and courageous young woman nicknamed Cinderella by her wicked stepsisters never grows old. And while other remakes and variations of the film seem repetitive and lack a bit of magic, this newest telling is inspiring and beautiful. No one could ask for a lovelier retelling of a childhood favorite.
British actress Lily James stars in the title role as Ella, bringing a wonderful performance to the screen as the young woman who wishes to change the life she is forced to endure while living with her stepmother. While seeming weak, Ella finds refuge and courage within herself in her lonely life after the deaths of her loving and caring mother and father.
Cate Blanchett stars as the malicious Lady Tremaine, playing the role of the evil stepmother with exact precision and subtlety. She spends her role slowly molding Ella into the servant girl she wants her to become so Ella can wait on her and her dreadful and slightly ridiculous daughters, Anastasia and Drisella.
Quite possibly the highlight of the film is seeing Helena Bonham Carter as the magical fairy godmother. A hilarious take on the character brings a smile to all those who remember the musical line “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.” She also serves as the narrator, carefully watching over Ella over the years as she grows up, and had a special sense of humor to the role that is hilarious.
The special effects are truly breathtaking as the magic in Ella’s dreary life becomes a reality. Ella’s cute mice friends are adorable and have their own personalities, even without words to convey their thoughts. Cinderella’s iconic dress transformation is a special and unique moment for the audience to see. Her dress is real spectacle, appearing almost fluid like water, and is adorned with beautiful butterflies that sparkle and shine in the light. Three time Oscar award winner Sandy Powell created masterpieces for the ball gowns for all of the lovely princesses and princesses in disguise. Even the Prince’s handsome tailored suit is attractive and beautiful.
This new “Cinderella” is truly wonderful, highlighting the importance of staying strong and working towards creating a better future for oneself. Ella’s mantra of “have courage and be kind” rings true in many situations in the lives of young children. The story of “Cinderella” just goes to show that a happy ending can come true to those who believe in the possibility of a better tomorrow.
