Once Abby Cinemas shut down, the building remained empty for years. There were rumors about another movie theater or a Tractor Supply Store occupying the space, but it is confirmed that a T.J. Maxx will be entering West Milford.
On February 11, members of the West Milford Economic Development Commission approved the retail clothing store. Even though construction will not start until next fall, Councilman Lou Signorino indicated that plans are in place. The store will benefit West Milford by providing jobs and it will be very convenient for town residents, as well as New York residents nearby. New York has a sales tax on clothes while New Jersey does not, so more people will go to the store to try to save some money.
T.J. Maxx is a department retail store which was created in 1976. There are over 1,000 stores in the United States, and over 300 in Europe. Similar stores are Marshall’s and Home Goods. Overall, West Milford residents are surprised but enthusiastic about the store. Tara Meany, junior stated, “I would like something more productive instead of a clothing store. I am just not that into clothes.” On the contrary, Cat Urena says, “They have home good supplies, pet things, make up, hair accessories, jewelry. I think it is awesome. I got some great items on sale. I can’t wait. Plus, I think it will bring some pretty great job opportunities aside from pharmacies and pizza places.” It will be nice not having to get on the highway to go to this splendid store. Adults think the store will be successful in this town due to its location and reasonable prices. Teenagers see the store as an employment opportunity, and as a great addition to the town. Residents will not have to travel almost 20 miles anymore, since the popular store will be coming to West Milford soon.
