From “Tetris” to “Flappy Bird,” apps come and go faster than relationships in the 21st century. Cell phone applications, more commonly known as “apps”, started out very early on from the simple flip phones. “Tetris” and “Solitaire” were big in the olden days because without touch screen being available, the only real way to interact with your game was clicking the arrows (up, down, left, right, and center) to swap cards or switch the positions in which blocks were falling. These were the simple times when we didn’t need fancy phones to stalk our friends and get mad at them, or download a thousand apps on our overly expensive phones.
But all of that changed when the app store attacked. Now when an apps dies out, it leaves every tech savvy person feeling thirst—thirsty for more. Some apps, however, stayed to live there in the limelight for longer than most. Here are some of the ghosts of app store’s past:
1) “Tetris”: A game in which blocks of different shapes and sizes fall from the top of the screen. The player must rotate the figure and move its position to fit it with the previously fallen pieces before time runs out.
2) “Solitaire”: Though still played now, back in the day it was a game that puzzled most people into wondering just how it worked. The goal was to get rid of your given cards into four different suits from Ace to King in numerical order.
3) “Minesweeper”: A game that was originally only on the older desktop computers. Nobody really knows how this game worked and just clicked random squares to see if a smiley face or bomb showed up.
4) “Snake”: A game in which you press buttons to maneuver the direction a long pixilated snake was going so it can “eat” the small piece of “food”.
5) “Candy Crush”: A game that was loved by all, this game’s objective was to connect three pieces of the same candy in a row and score a certain amount of points in a certain allowed number of turns.
6) “Flappy Birds”: This game took the world by storm and caused people to want to throw their phones at the wall out of sheer frustration. In the game the player must tap the screen to keep the bird flying or not tap and let the bird fall so it won’t hit a pipe.
7) “Make it Rain”: The world’s most simplistic game yet, the only motion needed was to swipe the screen. The player must vigorously swipe the screen making money fall out continuously until a certain goal is met.
8) “Draw Something”: The game in which the directions are in the title, draw something! The game requires you to connect to various social media sites and invite your friends to guess what you drew and vise versa.
9) “Farmville”: Recently converted into an app, this game was responsible for the annoying invitations to play. The invitations continue to appear in your Facebook notifications to this day, leaving you wondering why.
10) “Temple Run”: It was the Holy Grail of all apps. Temple Run was a game that had you swipe left, right, up, and down in order to keep a running treasure hunter from being killed by huge mutant gorillas.
11) “Angry Birds”: The almighty game that swept the nation. Everyone played “Angry Birds” because who doesn’t love to slingshot some oddly shaped birds with some serious personal issues.
