After exactly 214 days, Marine Reservist Sgt. Andrew Paul Tahmooresi was released from a jail in Mexico and returned home to America.
Tahmooresi was arrested for illegal weapon possessions charges after three firearms were found in his possession by Mexican customs a
gents. These weapons were provided by the military, so the court did not see a reason to prosecute him, but he was imprisoned anyway. He claims to have taken a wrong turn, and did not intentionally go to Mexico to sell the weapons and ammunition. He also says he told the guards about the weapons in his possession, but the officers did not seem to care.
Tahmooresi has been diagnosed with PTSD, an
d even attempted suicide while in the Mexican jail. During an int
erview about his time in prison, Tahmooresi related that the experience was not easy and described being tortured, tied up, and starved. He explains how he was tied to a bed because he was not “a well-behaved prisoner.” He even tried running away, but that attempt failed and he was beaten by guards. To this day, Mexican officials deny these abuse claims.
Because of the PTSD, therapy is being provided to him to help him recover. After returning home to Florida, he moved to California for better treatment. He is enjoying his recovery in America, and his family is very comforted knowing he is safe back home.
