Nestled in Mahwah is a pleasant family restaurant, The Mason Jar. It is minutes away from RamapoCollege, and serves all drinks in a mason jar – hence the name.
The décor of the eatery is old fashioned and historic. Advertisements and posters from the 50s and 60s line the main hall. It is split into a few sections – the bar, and two main public rooms. Private parties are available, so there is a separate room for those occasions. Even though the public rooms are a little dark, windows and stained glass lights illuminate the restaurant.
Most of the foods served are burgers and other meat dishes. There are salads and non-meat options also. I ordered the Taylor Ham and Cheeseburger. Was it good for my cholesterol? Not at all. Was it worth it? YES. The grilled burger was topped with cheese and two slices of Taylor ham. Fries came on the side, and a pickle. The Taylor ham complimented the burger perfectly. The burger was cooked thoroughly and the fries were crispy and perfect. The pickle was refreshing, too. The dessert menu looked very attractive, but the burger was very filling. I wanted the Reese’s pie, but if I got it I would be so full that I wouldn’t be able to walk.
I would highly recommend the Mason Jar for mostly any occasion. When I went, there was a child’s birthday party at the same time. It is right before an entrance to Route 287, so if you are going on a long trip and need a filling meal it would be perfect. It is comfortable enough that anyone can go for a nice lunch. It is not one of those places that someone has to dress up to go to. However, for a formal event that does require dressing up, it would work for that too. This venue would be appropriate for any day, any event, and any person.
