As late spring arrives, bringing hints of summer, students are eager to get out of school and start summer vacation. The senior class is getting ready for the future ahead. Being a senior gives you exciting events to look forward to including senior class trip, project graduation, senior weekend, maybe even leaving high school, but of course you can’t forget about senior prom. Ah, yes, the prom season has arrived and is in full swing. Prom in general is just one night girls have an excuse to get all beautified and wear gorgeous proms dresses and, well, most guys, they’re usually just dragged along. Both genders have a night of fun and dancing with their whole grade. Senior prom surely surpasses junior prom or any other dances. Surprisingly, the preparation for prom, especially for girls, can be a long strenuous process and….costly. To put it in perspective, this is for the ladies, we all know how much effort is put in and for guys, thank you for cooperating with the chaos, as well as following manhood (even if it hurts your wallet) and paying for the girl. Hey! It pays off in the long run… for the most part.
To begin, the attire can be the most important part especially for girls. Prom dresses can be pretty expensive ranging from $200- $500 or $600 hundred dollars unless you buy a basic dress or borrow someone else’s. Still, after buying the dress, alterations are another pain in the butt. For the guys, most just rent a tuxedo or suit, which isn’t nearly as expensive as a dress, generally around $120, but still you have to match the color of the date’s dress, so therefore it still becomes a bit time consuming…all to prepare for one night.
Transportation is another expense unless you just drive, but if you want to spice things up, there are limos and party buses. Personally, party buses sound more interesting and fun especially since you can stand up. In a limo, the roof is obviously very low so you can’t stand. If a bunch of friends come to get together and spilt the cost, it should not be too much but it’s still an expense.
Don’t forget to include the little things like hair, makeup, nails, accessories, and shoes for girls as well as the corsage for both the girls and boutonnière for the boys. Lastly, of course, is the prom bid, which is one of the most expensive elements of prom, especially if you’re paying for your date. In this high school, prom bids cost $120 per person and for a couple $240, which again, seems crazy for just one night of fun.
All in all, prom has been a tradition for high school students for the longest time, even if to some people it seems like a waste. You only are in high school once, so you might as well experience it to its fullest.
