Prom has been the center focus and theme of various movies pretty much since cinema became popular. From the old school gym dances to the glitzy prom movies, there have been movie classics left and right. Here is a Top Ten Prom Movie Countdown:
10) “Prom”: This was advertised as the ultimate prom movie that would be recognized for generations to come. Everyone was hyped for its release, but now the only reason it is remembered is because of its one word name. The movie is about the prom being trashed before it even started. It is up to Nova and her new found, forced upon, rebel partner to fix it. When they start working together, they find out a little more about each other. In the end, they each may wind up wanting to keep the other around.
9) “10 Things I Hate About You”: This classic prom movie is about a new kid at school who crushes on this girl who evidently can’t go to prom with him unless her older sister finds a date. However it just so happens that the sister turns out to be the meanest girl in school.
8) “Mean Girls”: It probably should not even be considered a prom movie seeing as the whole focus of the movie was nothing about prom, but everyone remembers the infamous prom scene in which Cady Heron returns to her senses and apologizes to all those she has hurt.
7) “Never Been Kissed”: An editor who wants to be a reporter must take a trip back in time to her most horrible memories—high school. Now transformed from “not” to “hot” she goes back to high school undercover. However, when she falls for a teacher at her school, she must decide between love or blowing her cover.
6) “Prom Night”: A horror-thriller about a girl’s perfect prom night gone to shreds, literally. A previous teacher of the girl had become obsessed with her and killed her family years before—then, he escapes prison. Now she and her friends must fend for their lives.
5) “She’s All That”: After the most popular guy in school is dared to take the weirdest chick in their grade to prom and make her prom queen, things get crazy. After a makeover and some contact lenses, he soon starts to fall for her.
4) “Footloose”: After dancing and modern music is banned after a tragic accident, it’s up to the new city kid Ren McCormick to bring back music and dancing to the small little southern town of Bomont at the senior prom.
3) “Sixteen Candles”: When Samantha Baker wakes up on her sixteenth birthday she expects her family waiting for her with cake and candles, but much to her dismay, she realizes her family forgot about her sixteenth birthday as they are all focused on her sister’s wedding. However, on a positive note, the guy of her dreams is now chasing her.
2) “Pretty in Pink”: A classic tale of a social outcast from the wrong side of the tracks who is suddenly asked out by the heartthrob of the school. With jealousy and drama all over will she make it to prom with her prince charming?
1) “Carrie”: Though a horror movie, Carrie White’s prom is probably one of the most well-known proms in history. The tale of the socially awkward girl who has been sheltered from the world by her psychotically religious mother is bullied by her classmates. She’s asked to go to prom by the perfect boy in school because of his remorseful girlfriend who wants to make it up to Carrie. However when the ex-queen bee drops a bucket of pig’s blood on her during her crowning of prom queen, Carrie kills nearly everyone in the school. Everyone knows the name of Carrie White.
