Curious what exactly Mu Alpha Theta is? Mu Alpha Theta is a chapter of the Mathematics Honor Society that runs right here in West Milford High School. This organization was described by Ryan Heerschap, the advisor of the group, as “… a select group of the best high school and college students from around the world… [that] will only be strengthened further with the group that will be inducted tonight.”
These students love math and all that it makes available to them. Heerschap states that “… these students do not ask when we will ever need this material, but rather embrace the rigorous courses,” and simply enjoy learning more about math.
They have taken many hard classes including PreCalc/Trig Honors, and AB or BC Calculus classes and excelled where others have struggled. Chelsea Gruber, Sara Reich, and Jonathan Albar are the President, Vice President, and Secretary of this group, respectively, and all do an immense amount of work not only for this organization, but also with tutoring math students in the High School and Macopin. Heerschap explains that these members,”…have higher standards,” than most kids and always strive for academic excellence.
After the welcome by Mrs. Debra M. Gretina, the District Mathematics Supervisor, the ceremony began. Senior members of the group include Sara Reich, Patrick Kerssen, Edward Looney, Jonathan Albar, Danielle Burns, Megan Chiovaro, Kelly DeNaples, Philip Federico, Chelsea Gruber, Cooper Harrison, Alyssa Herbaugh, Chris Kachler, Philip Leytes, Kimberly Livingston, Sophia Oselador, Anthony Pasquariello, Mackenzie Porch, and Destin Royer.
Seniors of the class of 2014 who were inducted to the society on May, 21 2014 are Makenzie Brady, Matthew Cascone, Lauren Conlon, Danielle Peck and Kate Swajger. There were also fourteen juniors inducted into the society who will create a solid foundation for the association next year.
Heerschap vocalized his gratitude for the hard work of these students by stating, “I am very proud of their accomplishments and hope that they keep this current success throughout the rest of their mathematics careers and into their daily lives.”
We wish all of the seniors the best of luck in college and congratulate them on their accomplishments here in the halls of West Milford High School.
