For many, art is something that hangs in museums and is nice to look at. We often buy paintings for our houses or apartments to add color, spice, or attitude to a room. We often rely on other people to tell us what real art is and sometimes question how “abstract” art can really be. For members of the National Art Honor Society here at West Milford High School, art is taken to the next level. These members actually make works of art, whether it is painting with oils, tempera paint, water color, or even sculpting. They look at the world differently than most of us and are always looking for inspiration in the world around them. Samantha Mays, Co-president of the society, explained that when she began taking art classes in West Milford she became part of, “an artistic community.” The other president is another senior here at West Milford, Ashley Caldaro. She describes the society as, “a painter’s palette, filled with an array of colors each holding their own special purpose.” The other officers include Victoria Vulcano, Vice President, Marie Marra, Secretary, Kelly DeNaples, Activities Coordinator, and of course recognition goes to the advisor Jennifer Monego. Mays continued on to explained that, “The art program here at West Milford High School has truly shaped me into the person I am today.” Other senior members include Chelsea Gruber, Nalani Lando, Cassandra Lanza, Marie Marra, Alchemy Pampinella, Callie Schultz, Kate Swajger, Tatianna Estremera, Grace Lebart, Meghan Koplish, Taylor Messler, Nadine Norris, and Thomas Torres. Caldaro summed up the society better than most people could in just a few words, “Sitting in front of you, is an amazing group of students, all artistically inclined in their own way. We have a mixture of athletes, musicians, scholars, dancers and purebred artists.” We wish all of the seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors, whether art related or not, we are sure they will do great.
