In late April a South Korean ferry flipped to one side and began to sink. The ferry was filled with young students and their teachers from Danwon School who were on a field trip. It is still unclear why the ferry flipped over in the first place. It took over two hours for the ferry to be completely submerged. While there were 174 rescued from the drowning boat, 201 people were found dead or have been confirmed dead and another 92 people are still missing. Children were calling from the ship to get people to come help them. The crew on ferry was not very helpful when the ferry started to flip and ten of the crew members have been charged with not fulfilling their duty to evacuate passengers safely. Captain of the ferry, Lee Joon-seok is facing criminal charges. When the boat was found, officials discovered that only two of the lifeboats had been released and an investigation has ensued. The President of the United States responded by saying, “I can only imagine what the parents are going through at the moment – the incredible heartache.” Of the 325 students sent on the trip, only approximately 70 survived. Those seventy students returned to school April 30 mourning the loss of their classmates. In an apparent suicide, Vice-Principal, Kang Min-gyu who had gone missing, was found hanging from his belt on a tree outside the gym of the school. A woman from the Danwon school said, “The deputy head of this school saved himself on the ship, but not his students.” Life will never be the same for this group of teenagers.
