The halls were a little quieter on April 11, the National Day of Silence. The GSA club here at here West Milford High School helps set up the day of silence. Students who participate in the Day of Silence are silent all day to protesting the silence faces of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people and their allies. People who support the Day of Silence want to stop the harassment, prejudice and discrimination of the LGBT community. The Day of Silence can also represent the voices lost due to harassment, prejudice and discrimination of LGBT people. The first Day of Silence, held at University of Virginia in 1996 was organized by Maria Pulzetti and included 150 participants. Students also supported the Day of Silence to support equality. Students who participated wore rainbow ribbons on that day. Teachers who support the Day of Silence wore stickers because they had to talk. There was a Break the Silence party in Ms. Signorelli room after the Day of Silence. People who came brought snacks and drinks to celebrate the day while hanging out with friends and having a bite to eat. Ms. Sig also takes the students outside to chill out after a quiet day. Hopefully next year there will be many more participants.
