As every romantic movie fan knows, Valentine’s Day marks the time of the year where filmmakers promise a new love story to dominate theaters around the country. This year, movie-goers eagerly awaited the new movie, “Winter’s Tale,” based on the novel of the same name by Mark Helprin, to be released on Feb. 14. A romantic drama with supernatural elements incorporated, the main character, a thief called Peter Lake, falls in love with a wealthy woman dying of tuberculosis, Beverly Penn. The film was promising, based on the fact that when the novel was published in 1983, it was loved by readers everywhere. The cast starred Colin Farrell as Peter Lake, Jessica Brown Findlay as Beverly Penn, Jennifer Connelly as Virginia Gamely, and Russell Crowe as Pearly Soames.
Much to the disappointment of the audiences, the movie was a flop. Not even two weeks after the release date, most cinemas, including Kinnelon’s Bowtie Theater, stopped showing the film due to the lack of popularity and negative feedback from both audiences and critics. The film can still be viewed in a few select theaters, and a DVD release is planned for the near future for those who wanted to see the film but missed out.
