In the last couple of years the country has been moving in a positive direction when it comes to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community. Many states have passed gay marriage laws and some states have been passing laws that are transgender friendly. But the country has taken a step backwards in the state of Arizona; the Arizona houses and senate passed a Right to Refuse law which came before Governor Jan Brewer to sign or to veto. This law states that if a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender person goes into a business s/he can be refused service because it goes against the owner religious beliefs. Some people are saying that this bill supports the right to work with your faith in mind and protects peoples’ freedom of religion. On the other side, business owners are arguing that this will hurt Arizona’s businesses. This will not only hurt businesses financially, but also when it comes to employment, Arizona residents will be afraid of being discriminated when going out and may be feared when applying for jobs. This law also opens the door to other people being discriminated against by religion, sex, race, age or disability. Governor Jan Brewer shared her thoughts on the bill, “But I don’t know that it needs to be statutory. In my life and in my businesses, if I don’t want to do business or if I don’t want to deal with a particular company or person or whatever, I’m not interested. That’s America. That’s freedom” (cnn.com). Jan Brewer vetoing the bill set an example for other bills like the Right to Refuse to be shot down in other states. Other states like Oregon, Idaho, Nevada Utah, Arizona, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia and Maine, Hawaii and Missouri have had similar bills presented to politicians. Most of these bills are not getting support from one of their chambers or the governors of these states. The people who sponsor these bills saw what went on in Arizona and withdrew the bills. The mess that went on in Arizona set a stage for the rest of the country. What went on in Arizona showed people what happens if people try to move backwards on LGBTQ rights.
