This is ironic, since I wrote the promposal article. Ever since October, all I’ve heard about is prom. Well, now that prom is almost here, I only have one comment – I want it over with already!
Let’s go through the whole process. First, it’s the beginning of junior year. Finally, the people in this grade receive some respect and recognition. The first thought that comes to mind about being a junior is prom. There are SATs, college planning, and all that important stuff, but really, mostly everyone focuses on prom. Finding a date and the dress are the most important factors to a girl – to a girl who is going. For everyone else, the dates are a side thought and the dress is probably nonexistent at this point. Keep in mind this is only in October so far.
The winter is really the time when all the work is done. The committee unites to plan the night, guys ask girls to be their beautiful dates, and thousands of dollars are collectively spent on the dress, hair, accessories, limos, and the overall look. While this is cute and dandy, there are people who DO NOT CARE about any of this. There are people with polar opposite opinions on prom. Either someone can’t wait to dance, or someone else can’t wait to stop hearing about it. There are important things in life than a high school dance! People who do not attend can still live a great life!
About a month before prom, girls feel like it’s acceptable to announce everything prom related. Buying the dress is a big deal, so that’s the only event actually worth sharing. Kudos to you for picking out the color of your nails, but, no one cares. Honestly, all it comes down to is the dress.
Want to know the best part? You don’t even stop hearing about prom once it’s over! Pictures are plastered on what seems like every type of social media. There is no way to escape the prom pictures. Of course, just not going online for the night works, but whenever someone logs in for the next time, it is difficult to find a non-prom post.
One thing I want to clarify is I’m not doing this to disrespect people. I understand how much effort it takes to organize a prom. Also, if you really are excited for this, go have fun. I went to prom last year for a different school, and it really was a good time. This was just to voice the unpopular opinion, because not everyone is excited to dress up. If you are going, have fun. If you re not, that’s okay. (It’s almost over; you’ll live.)
