What’s going on in Ukraine is something we have seen before in history. The world seems to be giving into Putin’s demands just like the world gave into Hitler’s demands. When Hitler took part of Czechoslovakia, the world appeased him. Ukraine could turn into another Cold War. This all started when Ukraine starting falling apart when the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych rejected, an agreement with the European Union, which would align its economy with the West. Most Ukraine people thought that the EU would bring more money into the economy. Since Yanuovych didn’t agree with the EU, he decided to strengthen ties with Putin. This caused the Ukraine people to break out in protest. Yanuovych instead stayed loyal to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which then caused massive protests in the street of Ukraine. Putin tried to help Ukraine’s government by buying 15 billion dollars of Ukraine debt and lowering their natural gas prices. The pressure was to much for President Yanukovych and his advisors, causing them to flee to Russia where Putin give him amnesty. With Yanukovych under Putin’s wing, Putin sent troops to Crimea, which is the southwest part of Ukraine. The people in Crimea are 60 percent Russian, “It will be legitimate and correspond to international law because we have a direct request from a legitimate president and it corresponds to our interests in protecting people who are close to us.” This statement by Putin is the reason why he sent troops into Crimea. Putin is trying to argue that he is helping the Russian people living in Crimea. Crimea seems to be going along with Putin. The Crimea government took a vote wheather they should secede from Ukraine and join Russia or not. The votes were tallied and the people have decide to side with Russia. The Crimean Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov said, “We are going home. Crimea is in Russia.” But the results of this vote aren’t embraced by everyone. The United States will not recognize the referendum because of it violates international law. The White House has stated that the vote was only passed because the use of military action. The United States has put sanctions on Russia but no real action has taken place. Is history repeating itself? Are we seeing the reinstitution of the Soviet Union? There are a lot of questions that we have to wait to answer.
