“Everything is awesome!” sings the new hit animated film, “The Lego Movie.” Based on the building toys almost every kid in America knows about, “The Lego Movie” brings the fun of Legos to life on the big screen. Hilarious comedy for all ages makes this movie a must-see for everyone looking for a good laugh. Following the main character, Emmet Brickowski, voiced by Chris Pratt, viewers are immediately immersed in the twists and turns that Emmett endures, completely altering the once normal daily life he lived in his home city as a construction worker. He is enlightened to the underlying problems in his city, and finds that the seemingly good-willed President Business is actually the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell), who is planning to end the world in only a few short days with the help of his assistant, Good Cop/Bad Cop (Liam Neeson), and his powerful weapon, the Kragle. Emmet, armed with the Piece of Resistance, joins the Master Builders (those who can use their creativity to build incredible Lego pieces) of the Lego world to put an end to Lord Business’s plans.
With a cast of numerous notable actors voicing the wide array of characters, the film had received positive remarks before the movie was even released on Feb. 7, 2014. Along his adventure, Emmet meets many Master Builders, which include the mysterious Wyldestyle (Elizabeth Banks), the wizard Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman), Batman (Will Arnet), the revenge-seeking pirate Metalbeard (Nick Offerman), overly-positive Princess Unikitty (Alison Brie), and Benny the astronaut (Charlie Day).
The animation of the film is very true to the original style of Lego toys, and is also used in new and imaginative ways as well. A movie of pure fun and adventure, the story reminds those who love Legos of the fun they had playing with them as kids and maybe still as adults. The characters are diverse and memorable, as it is pretty rare that you would ever find Dumbledore, Abraham Lincoln, Superman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Han Solo, evil robots, and a pink cat with a unicorn horn in the same movie. Each character’s unique persona is displayed with ease, and they are quite cohesive together despite the ultimate combination of personalities in a single film. The plot may seem to move quickly at times, but not too quickly as to confuse the audience, especially younger children. A surprising plot twist at the end makes the movie even more compelling as the storyline ties together in the conclusion. Every comedy lover won’t want to miss out on this film before it leaves theaters!
