Miranda Barbour is the latest self-proclaimed “Craigslist Killer,” claiming to have killed between 22 and 100 people.
The 19 year old is being accused of traveling across the country just to kill people she met and hired on Craigslist. There is one proven victim, a man from California, who was murdered by Barbour and her boyfriend. Apparently, Barbour offered the man money in exchange for companionship.
The reason for this young woman receiving so much attention and controversy is all of the accusations made by Barbour herself, her boyfriend, and even her father. According to her father, Barbour is “a heroine addict” and does not know what she is actually doing; if she actually did it. The boyfriend is also accused of being an accomplice to murder, but he confirms he still loves his potentially-a-murderer girlfriend. Also, when confronted on the murders, Barbour does not show any emotion. There are no signs of regret or remorse. To make this even worse, Barbour may have killed her child’s father. There is no name on the birth certificate, and Barbour refuses to announce his name. When asked about him, Barbour just states “Unknown.”
This is not the first time a killer has found victims online. There was another Craigslist Killer in 2009. Philip Markoff was a medical student when he went on a murder spree similar to Barbour’s. He only murdered two people, but he robbed three. All the victims were women, and all were murdered fairly around the same time. Markoff made a fake account on Craigslist claiming to be “Andy.” He found his first victim when she posted an erotic ad. In 2007, when the police narrowed the suspects, they arrived at Markoff’s apartment where they found a gun filled with the bullets used to kill the first victim.
There does not seem to be any correlation between both the Craigslist Killers, but both have received heaps of attention. This just goes to show that not everything online is true, or safe. Despite all of the murderers and hazards, people still insist they know best. Well, look at the result. Be safe online, and you will not become another statistic.
