Prom. It’s something mostly everyone takes a part in. But what is prom? Is it really just another excuse to blow money on a party or is it something more? Prom has been seen as an unforgettable night since early childhood. It’s the major plot for movies, books, TV shows, and it’s always talked about by older siblings and relatives. Just growing up hearing about feeling great that day, being able to pamper yourself, and having to share that experience with your best friends seems like a dream.
Ever since childhood we’ve been exposed to prom from the very start. We hear stories of our parent’s proms and just can’t help but wonder if we are to take a part in something that sounds as amazing as their unforgettable night. It symbolizes the end of high school and a pathway to rest of your life.
Truth be told, prom is always a little hyped and in the end is never what we expect it to be. Prom used to be in old smelly school toilet paper decorated gym, and people dressed all fancy to dance in a gym. Then prom evolved into a much more “serious” event where it was to be taken as an important night, and then it quickly changed into the modern, formal prom. Usually it takes place at formal restaurant or banquet hall, where everyone is dressed in their best and ready to have a memorable night.
The day starts in a normal manner with some students going to school and leaving early to get their hair, nails, and makeup done with their best friends chattering away with their expectations of the night to come. Finally they go home to change into their elegant attire and drive off to either a friend’s house or a picturesque place to photograph the memories. After taking pictures, the ride arrives and everyone hops into a sleek car to be whisked away to a night of fun. Getting there you meet everyone else and take some more pictures and wait to be seated for dinner. The food is usually good quality, but everyone is antsier to dance. Once the first few brave people hit the dance floor, everyone swarms in to enjoy the tunes and dance to the variety of music. The night is then spent in nostalgia, drama, and happiness. The night comes to a close as the announcement is made and everyone heads off to their destinations for senior weekend which is filled with tons of fun. Senior weekend is typically held down the shore and is spent safely partying away and spending time on the boardwalk and beach.
Prom is a different experience for everyone, and it is really what you make of it that determines if you will enjoy it or not. But there is one thing that is commonly said- never miss prom or you’ll regret it someday.
