Television is no longer something that only shows lovey movies, fascinating documentaries, and raunchy reality shows. American Horror Story has become an American phenomenon. The graphic show revolves around two main themes – sex and violence.
Brad Falchuk is a very well-known and respected producer in the entertainment industry today. Now the producer has been busy with American Horror Story. The show is very different because it changes the plot every season. The first season was about a family living in a haunted house, the second was about an extremely corrupt asylum, and the latest was about a nefarious witch coven. The upcoming season is called “Freak Show,” but a solid plot has not yet been released.
The pilot season was not at all innocent. There was no cute introduction, or a happy beginning with a family in love moving to the cute countryside. The introduction shows quick glimpses of people covered in blood, and this is supposed to represent the haunted theme. The first season is what made headlines across the country. What kind of show starts the pilot with a man getting caught cheating on his wife in their own bed? The answer is simple – this one. Ever since that episode, the audience has been drawn to see what sick twist will come next.
Season two, Asylum, was the best rating-wise. This season is based in the 1960’s, at Briarcliffe Mental Hospital. While the show is completely fictional, it does incorporate actual procedures and conspiracies. The asylum is run by a religious group, and the Monsignor. The person who really runs the asylum is Sister Jude – quite possibly the shadiest nun ever. In her younger years, Jude hit a small girl with her car. In order to feel accepted again, she became a nun. This does not mean she follows her vows. Jude would constantly fantasize about sexual activities with the Monsignor. Sister Mary Eunice was an innocent nun with her whole life ahead
of her. Sadly, she got possessed by Satan, and he was in her body for most of the season. Dr. Arden was the Nazi Doctor of the cast. In “I am Anne Frank, Part 1” a patient insists she recognized Arden’s face. While scavenging through Holocaust records to confirm her suspicions, the “Anne Frank” was correct. Arden worked under the control of Hitler as a Nazi Doctor. He would perform obscure operations to see if a patient was abducted by aliens, or to see if his “Immortal Human” concoction would work. (Spoiler alert: It does not.) The patients are what you would expect to see on a show about an asylum. Some dance around the room, others play chess with themselves, and others… well… just play with themselves. This season is more graphic and violent than the prior one, but it emphasizes the characters more than the sex. The only complaint about this season is the song played in the common room. That song alone would make people crazy. “Dominique” is a French song about a nun, so it was probably chosen to mock Sister Jude. However, since the song is in a different language and the music is very bouncy, it is not what you expect to hear in an asylum. Also, if you know the show, you would expect the song to have a polar opposite meaning.
“Coven” was the title of the third season. A coven is a house of witches who invest in their powers together. “Coven” featuring the actress who also played Sister Jude in “Asylum.” This time, she was still a corrupt leader. The Supreme of the coven is the Lead Witch, and this is what the season revolves around. The Supreme position is a prestigious one, since all the other witches in the coven must listen to her orders. Once the Supreme is killed, it is up to the six other witches living in the house to decipher who was the next Supreme. Each girl had to perform the Seven Wonders – telekinesis, pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, resurgence, transmutation, and coercion. Emma Roberts stars in this season as the stubborn princess, and expects the title to just be given to her. She is very offended when she finds out she actually has to prove her powers by demonstrating the Seven Wonders. She did not succeed in them, so she was not granted the prestigious title. It is the daughter of the past supreme who is handed the title. It is not usual that the powers are genetic, but in this case it was. It was not a very well-liked season, and many critics agree that they are not sad to see this season go. Hopefully “Circus” will be better.
It is fairly obvious that this show was designed for a certain age group. The actual rating is TV-MA, and it is no question why. In every season, at least four different people engage in sex, but a countless number of people fantasize about it. The amount of blood and murder on the series is honestly disgusting, but a true fan does not really realize it. You get used to seeing someone’s arm getting cut off after a while. While it is no secret that this is not at all a children’s show, don’t watch it just because you are actually old enough to. If you are sensitive or weak-stomached, please do not put yourself through that just to see an episode. If watching sex makes you uncomfortable, this is not for you either. You do not have to be a fan of either of those things to enjoy the show, but if you really despise these topics then you will loathe the show. There was no confirmed release date of “Circus” yet, but Seasons One and Two can be watched on Netflix. As of now, “Coven” is not in the episode list, but that may change soon.
