Last week, the 56th Grammy Awards were held. While this is a very prestigious music award, it does not always mean everybody takes it seriously. The point of being a celebrity isn’t necessarily to be a good person – it’s to be noticed. Many of today’s stars were able to receive attention, whether it was intentional or not.
One person in the spotlight was Lorde, the 17-year old singer from New Zealand. She performed her first hit, “Royals,” to inaugurate her Grammy career. She did win an award for the song, but her dancing while singing has been described as “gothic.” She looked very uncomfortable, and it made viewers feel the same way. The actual singing was great, but her interesting
movements are what made the teenager really noticeable.
Speaking of dancing, Taylor Swift had a quirky little move also. During the “Radioactive” ensemble, Swift created quite the controversy when she stood up and attempted to dance like a rapper does in videos. It was fairly inappropriate, but the clip only lasted three seconds. Regardless, those three seconds were enough to create a kerfuffle on social media.
The French duo Daft Punk had their second television performance ever at this year’s Grammys. Pharrel Williams and Stevie Wonder sang the 2013 hit “Get Lucky,” while the robots were in a recording booth. At first the lights inside the booth were off, but when they were lit, the pair was shown doing what they do best – EDM. It took a few minutes, but after Pharrel repeated the same line at least 30 times, the DJs started changing the lights to give the audience a visual display as well. Jokes started about Pharrel’s hat. A Buzzfeed list thought the singer robbed that hat from a park ranger. However, Daft Punk managed to make their second televised performance one to remember.
Last year, Pink did a daring acrobatic performance. Well, guess what she did this year? The same thing. It was not interesting at all. While in the air, she sang “Try.” Once she landed, she accompanied Nate Ruess singing “Just Give Me A Reason.” The only real difference this year was that the pop-rock star did not wear a practically see-through jumpsuit.
Many awards were given out, but the real reason to watch the ceremony is to observe celebrities in their natural environment. This year’s ceremony was a memorable one which will be talked about for a while. It may have even started the new dance crazes – Taylor Swift’s rapper attempt might become the new twerking.
