The West Milford Boy’s Basketball team held its tryouts the first week of December and the team is ready to start the season. The Girl’s Varsity Basketball team also held its tryouts and prepared for their first scrimmage on Dec. 12.
The Highlander Basketball team had a great turnout for tryouts this year. There were 35 kids who came out for the team this year, giving coaches a wide range of players from which to choose. Unfortunately, for some of the students, it meant their chances of making the team would be much slimmer.
Six seniors made the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team this year. Those seniors were: Sean Hammond, John Tierney, Chris McCormack, Dylon Forsythe, Nick Lima and Luke Basket. The Girl’s team had six seniors make the cut as well. The seniors on the girl’s team consist of: Heather Spirko, Meghan Koplish, Taylor DeBlock, Makenzie Brady, Marie Ambrose, Victoria Torp and Christina Lokai. Out of those players Lokai, Torp and Ambrose are captains.
The Highlanders had their first scrimmage against Vernon on Dec. 11. They won in a blowout with the final score being 119 to 51. This should boost the team’s confidence heading into the season which tips-off Friday, Dec. 20 at seven o’clock when they go up against rival Wayne Valley. This will be a home game and the team is encouraging fans to come out and support the team. They would like to see everyone showing Highlander pride in the stands by wearing white.
The Lady Highlanders will be preparing for an expected home opener game against Wayne Valley on Dec. 20. The Lady Highlanders are to have another game Jan. 3 vs. Fairlawn at seven o’clock. Come out and support your teams and favorite players!
