Located on 717 Otterhole Road, the newly established Highlander Deli and Grill had its grand opening this past May 1, 2013. Upon walking in you are greeted with smiles of the family run business and the smell of mouth watering food. We took time to interview the deli co-owner, Missy Liebau, who is a veteran restaurant and deli owner here in West Milford. Previously, she and her husband, Glen, owned numerous successful delis including the still popular Country Roads Deli. Liebau is a graduate of West Milford high school and was also in the newspaper club, so she was very open to an interview. Liebau explains, “We really like the location and are excited to attract more high schoolers to the store.” Many people don’t know that they, “have a Twitter and Facebook page.” Liebau has a very optimistic view about the restaurant in the future. She told us that she hopes that, “more high schoolers will come before or after school.” The deli also caters and has a full menu of catered items including party sub sandwiches using “The Deli Best” Thumanns cold cuts, and platters, salads, pasta, chicken and even items for kids parties. The Highlander’s full normal menu has over 20 regular items that are all named after teachers or activities in West Milford. Some of them include The Senior, The Finkster, The Custodian, The Freshman, Detention Time, Poppe’s Peppered Turkey, and Dondero’s Dog. They also offer homemade salads, bagels, homemade muffins, donuts, hot chocolate, assorted coffee.
and her family thought it would be a cool and creative idea to name the menu after people related to the Highlander community. She really enjoys being in West Milford and knew that the idea would be popular. Having a deli so close to the school that’s oriented to the population also makes good business sense. Missy hopes that the business is a success for the future. See our food review article later in our edition to find out more about the deli!
