The varsity team has worked hard throughout the 2013 season. While the girls lost in the second round of counties to Wayne Hills, they are determined to finish their season strong and win the state tournament during post season. Coach Provost boasts how she has worked more sprinting and core strengthening drills into the girls conditioning workouts. Provost has found that these new workout regiments have helped the girls become faster and stronger athletes. Provost states, “The girls usually out run their opponents in games, we have less injuries from the core build up, and overall I see the conditioning as an advantage to other teams.”
The team has also improved their defensive skills. Provost states that, “even forwards on the front line [have worked on their defensive skills] when they lose a ball. They can channel the girl and throw in a jab or block tackle and recover possession.” However, the girls have had a hard time scoring this season. “The girls are ball hungry in the shooting circle, but at times they lack communication and hesitate to shoot the ball. This has caused an unfortunate set back for us this year, as we have had multiple scoring opportunities against well-established teams, but we failed to capitalize on them,” Coach Provost mentioned.
The captains of the field hockey team this year include Taylor Messler, Megan Chiovaro, and Lindsey Welch. The girls have done a great job assuming the responsibilities that come with being a captain. Other team leaders this year include Brittany Emont, a senior. Provost states, “Brittany Emont has prepared drill options at practices and she really stepped up on the field this season, communicating throughout the games, and helping other athletes on and off the field.” The juniors of the team have also demonstrated leadership qualities this season. “I have six juniors on the varsity squad, and there are a few who really impressed me this season with their responsibility and leadership. They suggest ideas for games when we are struggling, cheer and coach their team on when they are on the sideline, and help their teammates,” Provost said.
Coach Provost has motivated her team in a variety of different ways this year. She uses positive reinforcement to make sure athletes are recognized for the positive things they do on the field. Provost hopes that this will cause a “domino effect” and athletes will offer their peers praise as well. The coach also adds variety to the team’s practices. “I tried to plan one day of practice when we do not use FH sticks and balls, but do something different that will help build the team,” Provost stated. The girls also have had weight room and game film sessions during Saturday practices. Provost said, “The girls LOVE going to the weight room and definitely take advantage of their time there. The game film sessions have really brought the team to a new level – they are able to take constructive criticism, they see their mistakes, and then we discuss how to fix them. This Saturday practice plan is beneficial and I feel as though it motivates the girls to improve.”
Congratulations to the girls on their double digit record!
